DYNASTIES 朝代 is a joint exhibition by the Berlin- based artists Phuong Anh Lê (* 1994) and Christian Lindemann (* 1990). It was inspired by their travels through the Chinese cities of Beijing, Changsha, Guilin, Hong Kong, Jingdezhen, and Shanghai in the spring of 2025.
Their analog photographs show encounters with a country where tradition and modernity intertwine: historic temples next to glass facades, ancient rituals in the pulse of urban life.
The interplay of the images and the motifs themselves show traces of different eras — as well as contrasts, breaks, and absurdities: traditional cos- tumes meet trendy sneakers, mythological embroi- dery meets stern busts of Mao, and gentle Chinese poetry meets hard concrete.
In addition to their photographs, both artists also present ceramic works. In both the photographic and ceramic works on display, the artists give visual and material expression to their observations and memories. A personal look at China, which attempts to make the history, culture, and identityof a distant country more accessible.
