This is a little study on (and tribute to) Memphis furniture from the 1980s—drawing all these bold forms in vibrant colors by all these brilliant designers was a lot of fun. Memphis was referred to as “a shotgun wedding between Bauhaus and Fisher-Price” and I think it totally hits the nail on its hat.
As many of you know, I am a sucker for Miami Vice and I am also a big fan of David Bowie—both have a connection to the Milano-based design group. When Phil Collins was a guest star in a Miami Vice episode called “Phil the Shill”, it featured many Memphis items. And Bowie used to be an avid collector of the design group. His personal collection was auctioned off at Sotheby’s in 2016 and most of these pieces are on view at the Modernism Museum in Mount Dora, Florida.
